Do not rush out to buy textbooks straight away! Talk to your supervisors and try out books in the library for a few weeks first. The War Memorial Library is very well stocked with reference copies of all major texts.

HOM
There are a number of different textbooks recommended in this subject. Guyton and Hall is the official course textbook. An equally good alternative is Boron and Boulpaep which is mainly aimed at Natural Scientists but is useful for HOM and for some second year courses. Some of the HOM lecturers speak particularly highly of Berne and Levy. It is probably best to try out each book in the College Library before buying one. Although not a necessary purchase, a suitable textbook for Histology is Wheater’s Histology.
- Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology by Hall
- Medical Physiology by Boron and Boulpaep
- Berne and Levy Physiology by Koeppen and Stanton
- Wheater’s Functional Histology; A Text and Colour Atlas by Young et al
MIMS
Voet,Voet and Pratt (VVP) – Fundamentals of Biochemistry is the rather weighty official course textbook. Many people also opt for Essential Cell Biology – Alberts et al which is much easier to read and is particularly useful for the cell signalling lectures at the end of Michaelmas term.
- Principles of Biochemistry; Life at the Molecular Level by Voet et al
- Essential Cell Biology by Alberts et al
